Where I have worked

Current 2008 Patrick Whight, Barrister & Solicitor: Proprietor

Civil Courts, Commercial and Maritime lawyer.

2001-2007 Pynt & Partners, Perth, Western Australia: Consultant

I was invited to join newly formed Insurance Transport and Marine practice Pynt & Partners as a Consultant. The firm has strong links with the insurance industry and an impressive portfolio of clients. At this niche practice, I continued to develop my interest in professional indemnity, marine, personal injury, recovery of damages and transport related claims. My clients included large insurance companies and mining companies.

1994-2001 Parker & Parker/Freehills, Perth, WA: Solicitor/Senior Associate

Freehills is the largest firm in Western Australia by a wide margin and a national practice. It has over 1000 lawyers and 200 partners located in Australia and South East Asia. It merged with Parker & Parker in 1997. At these firms I handled a variety of mostly public and product liability insurance, marine and transport, personal accident and professional indemnity claims, as well as commercial recovery claims, for clients ranging from ASX 20 companies to small and medium businesses.

1990-1994 Winckworth Sherwood, London, United Kingdom: Assistant Solicitor/Associate

The practice of Winckworth Sherwood has been built through a number of mergers over time but the roots of its practice stretch back to 1777. The Sherwood component of the firm was founded as a firm of Parliamentary Agents in the early nineteenth century. It specialised in water and transport affairs, and in particular in railways, from Stephenson's Rocket through to Eurostar. It is a medium sized firm by English standards, having 29 partners.

At this firm, I worked for business and private clients handling claims relating to personal injury, construction, employment, insurance, debt recovery and insolvency, corporate disputes, commercial landlord and tenant including possession and licensing applications, harbor authority prosecutions, racial discrimination and ecclesiastical law.

I appeared as an advocate before Circuit Judges, High Court Masters and Registrars, District Judges, Magistrates and Planning Inspectors.

1987-1990 Herbert Smith, London: Solicitor

Herbert Smith is a leading and full-service international legal practice with a 1,200-lawyer network across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, with nearly 300 partners.

It is recognised as one of the UK’s “magic circle” of firms and one of the world’s “global elite” law firms. It is acknowledged as being in the top tier in each of its main areas of work: transactions, projects and disputes.

At Herbert Smith, I handled commercial property work for high profile institutional and corporate clients (for instance Anita Roddick of The Body Shop) comprising of drafting and negotiation of leases, licences, surrenders, loan and financing, indemnity and guarantees, sales and acquisitions.

1982-1987 Chapman Wells Legon & Jones, Greater London: Articled Clerk/Solicitor

I started my working life in a 4-partner general practice. My practice included contentious and non-contentious work with a general litigation bias. It included both civil and criminal court proceedings as a duty solicitor at Magistrates Courts, legal aid cases, matrimonial, adoption, wills and probate, conveyancing and consumer transactions.
